Local recruitment of Atlantic cod and putative source spawning areas in a coastal seascape

چکیده

Abstract Increased knowledge on connectivity is crucial to our understanding of the population dynamics, genetic structure, and biogeography many coastal species. In marine populations, main factor for structuring thought be degree isolation confinement, limiting exchange between populations. However, offshore populations use areas as nursery grounds, but venture back natal spawning grounds adults. Therefore, increased ensure correct assessment living resources. Here, we combine assignment data Atlantic cod recruits sampled in 2017 2018 (as 0- 1-group cod, respectively) outer Oslofjord (eastern Skagerrak) with a biophysical model Skagerrak region over time period from settlement 2017. We located most probable locations by “back-tracking” larval drift trajectories found putative source both sides Oslofjord, well potential upstream sources North Sea Kattegat. Findings are discussed regards suitable management strategies restoration

Characterization of Atlantic Cod Spawning Habitat and Behavior in Icelandic Coastal Waters

The physical habitat used during spawning may potentially be an important factor affecting reproductive output of broadcast spawning marine fishes, particularly for species with complex, substrate-oriented mating systems and behaviors, such as Atlantic cod Gadus morhua. We characterized the habitat use and behavior of spawning Atlantic cod at two locations off the coast of southwestern Iceland ...

Recruitment Variability in North Atlantic Cod and Match-Mismatch Dynamics

BACKGROUND Fisheries exploitation, habitat destruction, and climate are important drivers of variability in recruitment success. Understanding variability in recruitment can reveal mechanisms behind widespread decline in the abundance of key species in marine and terrestrial ecosystems. For fish populations, the match-mismatch theory hypothesizes that successful recruitment is a function of the...

Cod and climate: effect of the North Atlantic Oscillation on recruitment in the North Atlantic

The impact of the environment on interannual variability in fish recruitment has proven difficult to establish empirically, and environment-recruitment correlations have often been found to break down when more data become available. This may suggest that the statistical models have failed to capture the essential explanatory variables, or that environment-recruitment relationships are non-stat...

Spawning stock and recruitment in North Sea cod shaped by food and climate

In order to provide better fisheries management and conservation decisions, there is a need to discern the underlying relationship between the spawning stock and recruitment of marine fishes, a relationship which is influenced by the environmental conditions. Here, we demonstrate how the environmental conditions (temperature and the food availability for fish larvae) influence the stock-recruit...

Substantial Downregulation of Myogenic Transcripts in Skeletal Muscle of Atlantic Cod during the Spawning Period

Gonadal maturation is an extremely energy consuming process for batch spawners and it is associated with a significant decrease in growth and seasonal deterioration in flesh quality. Our knowledge about the molecular mechanisms linking sexual maturation and muscle growth is still limited. In the present study, we performed RNA-Seq using 454 GS-FLX pyrosequencing in fast skeletal muscle sampled ...
